Baby Bonnet Pattern

Click on images to view larger photo.

I believe this is for a 1 year old baby. I did this on the LK140 (6.5mm or mid gauge) using TD2 with some DK yarn with 23 sts and 32 rows per 4 inches. You should be able to work this up on the standard, if memory serves me right, you would use TD4 or maybe TD5 to get the same results. If not, it may be larger or smaller. I hope to get this worked up on the bulky as well. Keep an eye on this page for changes.

Converted to the Bulky...below

Easy Short Row Bonnet on the Bulky...below

  1. CO 21 stitches.
  2. Work 5 rows of rib (or more if you wish, just remember for the other pieces).
  3. Knit 2 rows even
  4. *Increase 1 stitch each side ~ Knit 2 rows.
  5. Increase 1 stitch on left side only ~ Knit 2 rows*.
  6. Repeat from * to * 2 more times.
  7. Increase 1 stitch on right side ~ Knit 4 rows.
  8. Repeat last row 4 times ~ 35 stitches.
  9. Knit 10 rows even.
  10. Now decrease 1 stitch on left side each row for 3 rows.
  11. Keep decrease on left side as above and BO 4 stitches on right side Every Other Row until approximately 14 stitches remain.
  12. Bind off.

Make a second piece but reverse the shaping.

For the center strip, you will sew the sides to the back after the brim is made.

  1. CO 17 stitches.
  2. Work 5 rows of rib or whatever you did for the other pieces.
  3. Increase 1 stitch each side Every Other Row 7 times.
  4. Knit with no shaping until your at the top edge of the first bind off. What I did was take the weights off and then taking one side piece to match up as if I were sewing it up to make sure on the length.
  5. Decrease 1 stitch every 4th row 4 times, then Knit 2 rows plain.
  6. Bind off.

For the boy's brim you will hang the center strip as well as the side pieces with the Bind Off of the side pieces next to the center strip. NOTE: You can change the needles for the short rows to your liking, I only have what I shown in the video is all.

  1. Knit 4 or 6 rows plain. Set carriage to Hold to do short rows.
  2. Now put from R21 and the rest to the right of that needle to HP and knit across, put last stitch worked into HP.
  3. Put from L22 and the rest to the left to HP and knit across. Put last stitch worked into HP.
  4. Push 4 needles opposite carriage to HP, knit across, push last stitch knitted to HP.
  5. Repeat above until approximately 10 stitches remain in Knit.
  6. To Reverse Short Row, you will push 6 needles opposite the carriage from HP to FWP, Knit across, push last stitch knitted to HP.
  7. Repeat above until all stitches are back to work.
  8. Knit the same 4 or 6 rows as in the beginning.
  9. Now you can hang the first row as I show in the girls brim, knit 1 row and then bind off or bind off and sew the last row into place, your choice.
For the girl, you will work the center as for the boy but start the short rows right from the start to sort of create a scallop edge brim as shown in the end of my video.
  1. Knit 4 or 6 rows plain. Set carriage to Hold to do short rows.
  2. Push 4 needles opposite carriage to HP, Knit across, push last stitch knitted to HP.
  3. Repeat above until you feel that the brim is wide enough.
  4. To Reverse Short Row, you will push 6 needles from HP to FWP opposite the carriage side, Knit across, push last stitch knitted to HP.
  5. Repeat last row until all stitches are back to work.
  6. You can Bind Off and sew or hang the first row of the brim, knit one row and Bind Off.

Now for the ties, you can do an I-Cord or either sew or thread some ribbon into the brim making sure you have enough to tie under the babies chin. I will try to get photos of mine when they are completed but as most of you know I tend to go onto other things and sometimes takes a while to finish up the item. I hope that you will make some of these and either gift them or donate them to a worthy cause.

Easy Short Row Baby Bonnet

Done on the Bulky machine, 3.5 stitches and 6.5 rows = 1", forget the Tension Dial setting, but this is something that can be done with different gauges and it will fit someone somewhere. Or start off with more stitches to make it larger.

  1. Cast On 30 stitches.
  2. Knit 15 rows, hang first row to close folded hem.
  3. Short Row down to 10 stitches.
  4. Reverse Short Row back.
  5. Knit 15 rows and hang the first knit row at the end of the RSR on the needles, knit 1 row and Bind Off.
  6. Sew open ends of one hem only and do an I cord or crochet a chain for the tie and thread through other folded hem.
  7. Now for the ties, you can do an I-Cord or either sew or thread some ribbon into the brim making sure you have enough to tie under the babies chin. I hope that you will make some of these and either gift them or donate them to a worthy cause.

Notice in the last photo, one folded hem is sewn shut while the other one has the tie going through it, or you can just not sew that hem shut, really up to you how you want to finish it.
