In my video below, I added a folded triangle insert, similar to how us boomers use to add material to straight leg pants to create the bell bottom pants that were in fashion back in the 1970's, to the back of a cardigan that will make the sweater bottom wider than normal. But say you don't want to have it fold and be bulky. Well then you can just add the center triangle only and make it the height of the whole back piece as I show in the photos below.
Now if you use different thickness of yarns, it is a matter of just getting your gauge to make the insert fit in the sweater back, or front as well. Using the same yarn will be much easier.
Now I only did a small portion of the cardigan back in the video, it can be wider and taller if you choose. I would think that no more than half the stitch count and then how tall you want it as well are things that you will need to think of. If you are thinking of putting in a couple of these, then it would be less stitches to start out with and again the height will determine how many rows between the decreasing.
Here is a doll sweater showing that triangle in a contrasting color, now one can just use the same color and even put the purl side out to make it stand out as well. I started out with half the cast on stitches of the back, then the two outer pieces was in fact the whole back but divided in half with Sew As You Go (one can sew the pieces together if they choose) technique.
This way if you are making a sweater and you do not have the amount of needles needed for the piece, then you can just do this or even just do the sweater in half to work up on the machine. Working in different colors would also be something that one can do for this way of making a wider than normal sweater back and/or front.
